"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful, I know that full well."
Psalm 139:13-14 (NIV)
Last year, I visited the Sistine Chapel and looked up at Michelangelo's masterpiece. For four years, he lay on his back atop wooden scaffolding, painting that ceiling. Day after day, he meticulously planned each detail, mixed his pigments, and painted in small sections - one figure, one scene at a time. His body racked with pain, he painstakingly persisted, driven by a vision in his head. He even refused assistants, wanting to ensure every brushstroke matched his exacting standards.
In Genesis 1, we see an even greater artist at work - God, the almighty engineer. He designed and built an entire universe with stunning precision - the Earth's perfect distance from the sun, the moon's essential gravitational pull, the masterpiece of the human eye. He thought through every detail, planned for contingencies, and executed it flawlessly.
God enjoys creating and being creative. He spoke the stars into existence and then He named each one. When He designed the eagle, He created a magnificent bird - powerful, fast, with eagle-eye vision, a precision fisher. And when He engineered the solar system, His math skills were peak perfect - massive planets, incredible speeds and distances, orbits, and gravity keeping it all together. And then... with great satisfaction, He looked at what He'd created and said, "It is good". Each creation carries His signature, His personality, a piece of Himself.
Here's the amazing thing - God's still creating today. "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation" (2 Corinthians 5:17). When you give your life to Christ, the Master Creator goes back to work. He doesn't just patch up your old life - He (re)creates something entirely new. He puts the same care and thought into this new creation, wonderfully remaking you. Once again, He looks at what He's created and says, "It is good."
Food for Thought: Look at something you've created or built - could be a meal, a piece of code, even a well-organized spreadsheet. Notice the care you put into the details. Now think: if we take such care with our creations, how much more did God invest in creating you?
